La science des rêves – Minute Movie Review

Mittwoch, April 14th, 2010

Review:

The Science of Sleep tells the story of a young man who mostly lives in his dreams, substituting them for a reality he can’t deal with. It magically blends the boundaries between reality, fiction and dreams, creating a visually arresting yet ultimately empty experience that leaves everything open to interpretation. It’s redeemed somewhat by a good cast and some amusing scenes, but it’s deep insights are ultimately superficial.

Director Michel Gondry is mostly known for making the also vastly overrated Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His best film by far, however, is the endearing little comedy Be Kind Rewind. It’s also his most atypical work.

The thing I enjoyed most about the film were the dream worlds created, especially the paper tube city and the television studio. They had a nice surreal touch.

Feel free to discuss the meaning of the ending in the comments. Personally, I dislike the happy ending apologists, but sadly finding little evidence to the contrary.

The Ten Best Movies of 2008

Mittwoch, Januar 7th, 2009

Everybody loves Top Ten Lists, right? You can never get enough of them, correct? If you read one to the end, you want nothing more than start looking at the next one, or am I wrong? In any case, I like Top Ten (or basically any other number) Lists. I know they are silly and arbitrary and highly subjective, but they are still fun – even if one just reads them to poke fun at the author(s). So to start my own habitual list-making off, I hereby offer you the TEN BEST MOVIES OF 2008!

Minute Movie Review – Be Kind Rewind

Review:

When Mike is given custody of a video rental store that actually still relies only on VHS tapes, it’s only a matter of time before he and his friend Jerry screw it up. Jerry becomes magnetized and as a result, all tapes are erased. To save the store, the friends to remake all the movies themselves, a process they call sweding. Be Kind Rewind is a comedy that works best when it shows the movie remakes. Often extremely funny, it’s also a tender declaration of love to film-making and the lost art of creativity in everyday situations and people. Not everything works in this film, but it is fun to watch nonetheless.

Check the internet for sweded films. Fans have made a bunch of them already – and many are surprisingly entertaining.

The spoofed movies are extremely diverse – ranging from “Ghostbusters” to “Rush Hour” as well as “2001: A Space Odyssey“, resulting in fun for everyone.

Film aficionados will know director Michel Gondry from his previous films like “The Science of Sleep” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind“.
