One correction. Bolt gleaned most of the dialog in "Man for All Seasons" from the writings of Sir Thomas More and his son-in-law, William Roper and then edited it for clarity and brevity (More's favorite rhetorical trick was to go on at great, great length about a subject and then sum it up in a single, pithy sentence. For example, after writing almost a whole book about the drawbacks of martyrdom, he summed it up by saying, "but the pinch is in the pain.") The best line of the movie, "But for Wales?!" however, is totally Bolt's invention. Scofield's delivery of that line is the most amazing line reading I've ever heard.

As you are fully aware, my letter-writing endeavours have long ago turned to other people...

Also, I'd rather watch Marilyn Monroe's complete works than any film with Sandra Bullock. And I don't even like Marilyn!

This is one of my all time favorite films. I love the novelty of the subject matter for a romantic comedy and just the way the movie is filmed. E. Edward Grey's law office is like something out of a fairy tale. The colors and set dressings are so different. Most of all though I love James Spader's and Maggie Gyllenhaal's performances...they are perfect! This is just the type of film that truly fits these quirky and unique actors. They really are at their best when doing eccentric and slightly off center roles, and these two characters fit that bill perfectly.

Solaris, as in the Steven Sonderbergh remake of Andrei Tarkosvsky's Solyaris? Mostly the uncertainty of understanding (or rather comprehending) what is going on, the pure terror of isolation, the philosophical musing about space travel that can also be found in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Additionally, both films are expertly crafted, with beautiful and lingering shots, quiet tones of desperation, that serve to enhance the story and viewing experience.
